Immigration Research on Display at South Bay

Fifth graders in Mr. Campbell and Ms. Stewartโ€™s class thumbnail263457

Fifth graders in Mr. Campbell and Ms. Stewart’s class at South Bay Elementary School recently completed a project that tied into their English language arts nonfiction unit on immigration.

Working in small groups, the students collaborated on research reports centered on immigration issues. They conducted their research online and were also visited by guest speakers who discussed various topics. Most notably, they studied Ellis Island and Angel Island.

After completing their research, the students divided their information into subtopics, which were then transferred to a trifold presentation board. The class held a gallery walk and invited guests and students to view their research presentations.

The second graders in Ms. Fitzpatrick’s class at South Bay Elementary School are studying characters facing challenges during their literacy lessons. They recently read “Bee and Daisy,” an animal-themed fantasy tale centered on kindness. Working with partners, they each created a bee or a daisy and collaborated to brainstorm different ways they could show kindness. They filled their daisy petals and bees with various kind acts.

The fifth grade student artists in Janice Dougherty’s class at South Bay Elementary School showed off their spooky sides by making self-portraits. After studying characters created by Tim Burton, known for his unique animation style in “The Nightmare Before Christmas” and “James and the Giant Peach,” students made portraits of themselves inspired by his work. The fifth graders used value, shading and blending techniques to create pieces that look three-dimensional.

During their music lessons with Ms. Couture-Craft, students at South Bay Elementary School participated in a schoolwide music lesson. In their respective music classes, each grade level learned the song “Thanksgiving at Our House.” They then created a drum circle using different instruments. As the students progressed in grade, more instruments were added to the beat of the song. The fifth graders pictured used drumsticks, hand drums and boomwhackers to keep the beat.
