Mission Statement
The West Babylon School District’s Safety and Security Department’s role is to ensure a safe, and secure educational environment for all students, faculty and staff. We understand that students learn best when they can attend classes in a secure and welcoming environment. Our security staff and administrators have been trained in building emergency responses, CPR, first aid, automated external defibrillator (AED), EpiPen and Narcan use and Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) response. We work collaboratively and take a proactive approach to all concerns. Many of our security officers have a background in law enforcement and have been instrumental in enhancing our safety and security practices.

Measures Taken to Improve School Security
School safety and security is a top priority for all of us. Our Senior Guard facilitates monthly meetings with local security directors and law enforcement to discuss topics of concern in the region. As communicated in letters to the community, as well as articles within our district newsletter, we have enhanced our safety procedures districtwide. Each elementary school has a minimum of one security guard at it at all times with district-wide security guards randomly visiting each school. Both the junior and senior high have a security officer assigned to the main entrance of the building for the monitoring of visitors. In addition, the junior high and high school have additional security guards who monitor the interior and exterior of the building. Building and district emergency teams participate in ongoing safety and security training sessions. We continue to emphasize the importance of keeping all exterior doors closed and/or monitored. Ongoing district and building meetings and drills with Suffolk County Police Department’s 1st Precinct representatives are held to highlight and identify ways to address safety concerns.
The district remains committed to enhancing the security of our school buildings. Over the years, we have implemented a variety of measures, including but not limited to:
- Installing double-door vestibule systems at all school entrances;
- Employing phenomenal retired law enforcement officers as armed guards;
- Installing uniquely identified entryways for law enforcement access;
- Implementing one-button lockdown systems;
- Connecting lockdown systems directly with SCPD;
- Reinforcing entrance glass and using visitor monitoring systems;
- Adopting student ID entry systems;
- Conducting active shooter training with the SCPD; and
- Collaborating with SCPD and Homeland Security for comprehensive building reviews
The Senior Guard along with the District Administration continually investigate ways to enhance our school safety procedures to provide a secure educational atmosphere for our students and staff members.
Despite these many enhancements, we must always remain vigilant. We encourage all parents and guardians to speak to their children to review steps that should be taken if they are confronted by strangers. Unfortunately, despite all of our security enhancements, strangers may approach our children near our schools or close to our homes. Please remind them that at all times (while walking alone or in a group setting) they need to be alert for suspicious individuals and to quickly contact the police, or school authorities if they have any concerns.
As always, if you have any concerns or suggestions, please feel free to send an email or reach out to any one of our administrators.
