District’s String Musicians Rock Out

West Babylon School District’s orchestra students thumbnail256334

West Babylon School District’s orchestra students had a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to play alongside a famous musician, thanks to an artist-in-residence program with Mark Wood, one of the founding members of the Trans-Siberian Orchestra. Mr. Wood visited with the student-musicians in grade 5-12 from throughout the West Babylon School District on March 14 and 15. Mr. Wood, a native Long Islander, worked with students for two days on a variety of rock songs from the ‘80s and ‘90s, including artists like AC/DC, Coldplay and Bon Jovi. As part of the Evolution Tour and the “Electrify Your Symphony” concert, Mr. Wood played in concert alongside the 220 West Babylon student-musicians during a show at the West Babylon Junior High School on March 15.

Great State Race at Tooker

Tooker Avenue Elementary School students thumbnail256228

Fifth graders in Ms. Shah’s class at Tooker Avenue Elementary School have spent the past few weeks studying U.S. geography. They learned about the different regions and how their climates affect the landscape of the regions. As part of a challenge, students competed in two groups against one another to put together a puzzle map of all 50 states as quick as possible. After declaring a winner in under three minutes, the students went head-to-head as they took to the Smart Board to identify the states.

Students at Tooker Avenue Elementary School participated in P.S. I Love You Day by creating kindness grams to give to faculty throughout the school. Students were encouraged to write kind notes and tell teachers or staff members positive thoughts about them. Students walked the building with their classroom teachers and delivered these kindness grams to purple mailboxes that the safety committee at Tooker Avenue made for each staff member.
