To celebrate reading and build excitement around books, Ms. Sagginario’s fifth graders at Santapogue Elementary School hosted a Tournament of Books inspired by March Madness.

Students nominated their favorite titles, which were then seeded into a bracket. Each week, two books faced off and students voted on their favorite based on class discussions, read-alouds or personal reading experiences. The winning choices advanced through the rounds until a final champion was crowned. This year’s winner was “Restart” by Gordon Korman.

The activity encouraged friendly competition, critical thinking and lively conversation about literature. It also helped students explore new genres and authors while building a reading community in a fun and creative way.
